Responsibilities

The Chair - Pharmaceutical Sciences - Worcester/ Manchester (W/M) reports directly to the Dean of the School of Pharmacy - W/M and is a member of the School of Pharmacy - W/M Executive Committee.  The Department delivers the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree Program via an accelerated curriculum.  The Chair has overall management responsibility for the faculty and programs of teaching, scholarship, and service based in the department.

 

  • Coordinate the completion of academic and governance tasks required of academic members within the Department.
  • Recruit, train, and develop faculty (including adjunct faculty), professional staff, and support staff to meet the needs of the department
  • Set goals with faculty members in the form of planned Annual Activity Report (AAR). Evaluate faculty members for promotion, transition from provisional status, and contract renewal decisions in accordance with College policy. Work with department members to prepare for, and respond to, their reviews.
  • Manage the department’s budget as determined by the dean.
  • Assist with maintenance of ACPE accreditation.
  • Represent the department to internal and external academic communities, alumni, business and industry, government, foundations, and the general community.
  • Promote and enhance the image of the department, the School, and the College through participation in appropriate professional and academic organizations.
  • Represent the needs of the department to the dean and higher levels of administration.
  • Communicate school and university initiatives and priorities to the department.
  • Oversee administrative assistant and graduate assistants.
  • Hire and manage adjuncts.
  • Actively promote department programs within the College, at other institutions and in the greater New England region.
  • Participate in weekly executive committee meetings.
  • Handle student grievances, complaints, cases of plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty as needed.
  • Serve as role model for department faculty through contributions to the teaching, scholarship and service activities of the department, school and college.
  • Teach in requisite courses, as needed.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed academic or practitioner publications.
  • Arrange attendance of faculty at events on the behalf of the School and College.
  • Schedule classes for the Department.

Rank is commensurate with education and experience.

 

Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Required:

 

  • A Ph.D. (or equivalent) in medicinal chemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, biomedical sciences, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of seven years of academic experience in an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education-accredited College/School of Pharmacy.
  • Excellent administrative, communication, managerial and personnel-evaluation skills
  • Demonstrated success as an administrator within an academic or related environment
  • Ability to lead
  • Ability to mentor
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Desired:

 

  • A background in pharmacy
  • Post-doctoral research experience
  • A record of funded research and ability to attract funded research activities
  • Demonstrated record of scholarship that meets the criteria for appointment to a senior academic rank
  • Evidence of developing faculty and promoting faculty excellence, particularly in the areas of teaching and scholarship
