The Vice Dean reports directly to the Dean of the School of Pharmacy – Boston. The Vice Dean is a senior member of the Dean’s leadership team who also advises the Office of the Provost on matters relating to graduate programs throughout the University.  Reporting to the Vice Dean are the Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Business and Administrative Sciences, and the Associate/Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies.


The Vice Dean’s major responsibility is to oversee all non-licensure programs within the School of Pharmacy – Boston, including the BS programs in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Pharmaceutical Business and Marketing; MS and PhD programs in Pharmaceutics, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Economics and Policy, Clinical Research, and Drug Regulatory Affairs; and certificate programs in Clinical Research, Health Policy, and Regulatory Affairs.


  • Under the guidance of the Dean, provide dynamic and effective leadership for the program and its organizational units, building an esprit de corps among the faculty, staff and students
  • Ensure the success of each department in contributing to the teaching, scholarship and service missions of the School and University
  • Ensure effective oversight of the implementation, evaluation (including outcomes assessment) and continuous improvement of the academic programs within the departments
  • Collaborate with the Dean’s accreditation activities for all professional degree programs offered within the School
  • Collaborate effectively with admission and recruitment staff to market the School’s academic programs, enhance the applicant pool, and grow enrollments consistent with University goals and resources
  • Manage the budget consistent with the University’s financial goals, policies and procedures
  • Effectively and proactively represent the University’s vision and mission, strategic goals, and policies and procedures, as well as administrative decisions, to the School’s faculty, staff and students
  • Ensure consistency of the departments’ goals and plans with those of the School and the University and communicate such, along with resource needs, to the Dean and senior administration
  • Demonstrate initiative, autonomy and effectiveness in daily management of the School’s academic programs, faculty, staff, students, operations and budgetary management, consistent with accreditation standards (where applicable) and the University’s policies and procedures, resulting in their consistent and predictable application in diverse situations
  • Demonstrate initiative and effectiveness in managing and developing the department chairs, assistant/associate dean, faculty and staff, and handling personnel matters that arise
  • Collaborate effectively across Schools and Departments to achieve School and institutional goals
  • Collaborate effectively with student services and administrative offices to meet Department, School and University goals
  • Provide effective oversight and leadership in developing new programs, as well as innovative delivery methods (including online pathways) to expand the reach and appeal of existing programs
  • Seek external resources to support the School’s programs and initiatives, through grants and contracts, and in collaboration with the University’s development office
  • Enhance the visibility and positive recognition of the Departments and their respective programs with key stakeholders and constituents in the community and the respective professions
  • Curriculum development, implementation and assessment
  • Hiring of department faculty and staff; collaborating with faculty and administrative offices to recruit students and foster their academic success and progression
  • Identifying and seeking opportunities for program growth
  • Overseeing daily operations including budgetary management

 Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the Dean of the School of Pharmacy.

  • A terminal degree in a health profession, education, or management
  • A minimum of five years of successful experience in a formal leadership position in a college or university offering degrees in the health sciences, a healthcare institution or health-related organization
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, priority management, and teamwork skills
  • Effective use of information technology for communication and decision-support
