Responsibilities

The Director of Immigration and International Student Support Services leads a team that provides immigration and international student support services across the University’s campuses. The Director plays a key role in international student support services that ranges from new student orientations to seminars and workshops relevant to the international student population.

 

  • Serves as the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and point person for students, faculty and administration for all of the University’s campuses: Boston, Worcester, Newton, and Manchester
  • Advises the Provost’s Office, as well as key stakeholders within the University on current immigration policies and regulations
  • Supervises two staff members: the Associate Director of Immigration and International Support Services, and the Associate Director of Immigration and International Support Services/SEVIS Database Manager
  • Provides ongoing immigration consultation and training to the Admissions Office
  • Oversees the maintenance of data integrity for the department (Colleague, SEVIS)
  • Reviews, on an ongoing basis, compliance and regulations mandated by the Department of Homeland Security governing non-immigrant students in order to ensure continued Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) compliance with international student’s records, including SEVIS registration each semester
  • Monitors international student progress each semester to ensure compliance with the U.S. Immigration & Custom Enforcement. Interviews international students and their family members to assess their needs for issuances of SEVIS I-20 forms for admissions, transfer or change of status
  • Provides travel support such as I-20 validation, advising students on travel issues such as visa expiration and dependent documents, and writing late arrival travel letters
  • Provides work authorization, on and off campus, including providing guidance on obtaining a social security number and other related processes
  • Provides international students with OPT workshops and ongoing guidance, transitions from OPT to other categories like TN and H-1B, scheduling immigration attorney visits to campus to discuss immigration options after graduation
  • Provides guidance and workshops to faculty/staff as needed with regards to OPT and CPT opportunities for international students
  • In collaboration with Student Affairs and the Admissions Office, responsible for key coordination of orientations, workshops, new student check-in, and seminars for the international student population
  • Provides guidance to students, faculty and administrators on transitions such as F-1 program extension process, leave of absence process, transfer of school’s process
  • Oversees the maintenance of international programs website updates as it relates to Immigration and International Support Services
  • Develops and updates resources relevant to Immigration and International Support Services
  • Leads University-wide Immigration initiatives that support the University’s goals
  • Assigns special projects to staff in furtherance of office and university objectives

Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Required:

 

  • Bachelor’s required, Master’s preferred
  • Previous experience as a Designated School Official (PDSO/DSO), a minimum of 3-5 years of experience required in a university setting
  • Prior experience maintaining SEVIS updates and perform SEVIS functions, including: issuance of initial attendance I-20s, semester registrations, travel signatures, student biographical information updates, knowledge of regulations pertaining to student employment (OPT, CPT)
  • A solid understanding of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Department of State (DOS) regulations and requirements as applied to international students, primarily F-1/F-2 visa holders.
  • Experience in an academic setting with complex compliance and regulatory functions related to immigration advising, institutional policies, and SEVIS processing
  • Ability to clearly communicate government regulations and university policies to international students, faculty/staff and administration
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral), effective presentation skills, very detailed oriented
  • Experience working in immigration services including maintaining SEVIS updates and performing SEVIS functions
  • A solid understanding of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Department of State
  • Experience working in immigration services including maintaining SEVIS updates and performing SEVIS functions
  • A solid understanding of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Department of State (DOS), Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV), Social Security Administration (SSA) regulations and requirements applied to international students
