  • Overview

    The Network Engineer reports to the Infrastructure Manager and is responsible for operating and enhancing the network and security infrastructure for the University.  The Network Engineer provides support to the University’s faculty, staff, students, alumni, researchers, and prospective students.  The position may be filled at the Boston, Worcester, or Manchester, NH campus.

    Responsibilities

    Monitoring and maintaining the network

    • Support essential network services across heterogeneous hardware
    • Maintain and enhance a stable, responsive and cost efficient network infrastructure; LAN, WLAN, WAN, PBX, DNS Servers, remote access.
    • Support essential network services across Azure and other cloud vendors
    • Monitor performance and traffic shaping/QoS
    • Maintain and enhance network security

    Analyzing/Predicting Network function

    • Implement and maintain network management tools
    • Collect network traffic analysis and analyze central logs
    • Perform vulnerability scanning

    Troubleshooting and Business Continuity

    • Provide 2nd level expert network support for the Help Desk to ensure timely response and resolution to problems as they are escalated
    • Work with IS staff on disaster recovery plans for the University's computing environment
    • Prioritize Business Systems down to student access
    • Consult with faculty and staff to determine computer and software needs and specifications
    • Implement complex network configuration changes accurately without adversely affecting the network availability for the entire campus, including internet connection, mission critical services and remote campuses
    • Respond to security vulnerabilities, attacks and events

    Planning for future growth

    • Assist in designing and modifying network support programs
    • Assist in long-range capacity and budget planning for networking systems
    • Create documentation of current network design and tracking all future changes
    • Provide network consultation services to systems administrators for campus network additions and reconfigurations
    • Develop, implement and monitor computer related security policies
    • Design, develop, implement and document computer and networked based solutions for the University's user community
    • Work on assigned projects as directed by management
    • Perform standby operations with others on the staff to ensure 24/7/365 operation of the University
    • Resolve hardware, software and service problems by opening trouble tickets with equipment vendors and service providers as necessary
    • Work across the Information Services department to plan and implement new technologies with a strong focus on security and business continuity

    Travel among the three campuses may be required as needed.

     

    Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the manager.

    Qualifications

    Required:

     

    • A Bachelor’s degree (Computer Science or related field) and a minimum of two years enterprise network administration experience; or four years of enterprise network administration experience
    • MCPHS University relies primarily on Cisco equipment; as such, a CCNA Certification is required (CCNP preferred)
    • Experience working with, but not limited to, Catalyst 45xx, 65xx, and 37xx devices
    • Comfortable in a large, complex environment including VOIP, NAC, VLAN’s, redundant links, Bridgewave Wireless gig bridges
    • Proficient with VOIP, routing protocols OSPF, IGIRP, EGIRP, BGP and more
    • Experience identifying and solving data network support problems
    • Experience implementing and troubleshooting vendor supplied software and hardware
    • Experience interacting with users to identify and resolve network problems
    • Experience working cooperatively and communicating effectively with management, colleagues, and end-users in a customer service driven environment
    • Knowledge of Microsoft applications systems with appropriate experience (5-8 years) or experience
    • Working knowledge of structured wiring systems and the supporting international standards
    • Working knowledge of LAN and WAN technologies, including TCP/IP, Ethernet, Wireless LAN, switching and routing protocols and IPsec
    • Demonstrated record of delivering quality customer service and communicating effectively both verbally and in writing
    • Must have a flexible and professional attitude toward working hours

    Desired:

     

    • Experience with Azure and other cloud vendors
    • Working knowledge of Aruba Wireless and/or Palo Alto Firewall solutions highly desired

     Physical requirements:

     

    • Ability to travel among all campuses (Worcester, Boston, and Manchester, NH)
    • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
    • Ability to be available for some after hours and weekend shifts
